Sun Egg

Sun Egg One in a Trillion

On the morning of the eve of the September Equinox Fluffetts Farm were amazed to discover one of our girls here in Wimborne St Giles Dorset had laid a very special egg.

Our 12,000 free range hens lay over 4 million eggs a year and having handled around half a billion eggs during the course of three decades dedicated to our chickens, we have never before seen an egg quite so unique. The clear image of the shinning sun is a reflection of the natural golden yolk our customers so love about their Fluffetts’ eggs, as well as being an inspiring symbol of hope in turbulent times. In our long farming experience this particular Fluffetts hen can rightly claim to have laid a one in a trillion gift from nature, clucking marvellous.

Everyone we have shown our “Sun Egg” to has been amazed by this incredibly unusual gift from nature and with World Egg Day falling on 10.10.25 we feel it is a wonderful way to highlight the work of farmers who dedicate their lives to caring for their chickens and producing healthy nutritious food day in day out.

Egg facts

Hens are capable of laying an egg every 25 hours.

There are over 40 million lying hens in the UK producing 35 million eggs per day.

Young female chickens, known as pullets reaching maturity at around 18 weeks old, have thousands of ova, or egg cells, stored inside their ovaries with each one having the potential to become an egg.

Some scientists believe the humble egg is a reflection of the shape of the universe and in folk traditions eggs have often been held to have magical properties.

We have yet to arrive at a conclusive answer to the question “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?”.

Egg shells are a marvel of nature being only millimetres thick but having incredible vertical strength while still being fragile enough to allow cracking with a gentle tap to the side.

Eggs, which can be served in a multitude of ways, are a nutritious easily accessible whole food supporting health at every stage of life. The egg is unique in being an unprocessed food providing 13 essential nutrients capable of providing a vital role in human diets.
