The Laid in Britain Quality Assurance Scheme
encompasses a thorough testing and monitoring programme to maintain the
health and welfare of the laying flocks and guarantee the best quality eggs
to the end user.
Within the scheme, competitive exclusion has been
chosen as the method of disease control because of its proven record against
all salmonellae, coliforms, pasturella and other potential food safety hazards.
It has a long-standing record of value in both the
broiler and broiler-breeder sectors and is widely regarded in many countries
as being a valuable aid in the modification of Salmonella invasion. DEFRA-monitored
results of its value in commercial layers is now available.
For initial entry into the scheme, producers must
blood test each and every flock they have for Salmonella enteritidis and
typhimurium. Negative flocks are admitted directly into the scheme following
administration of competitive exclusion product and auditing.
Competitive exclusion product is given on housing at laying farm routinely
in participating farms. It can also be given during rear as extra cover.
A certificate of compliance will be issued, and, point
of sale material made available.
There is an additional swab testing of the environment, in compliance with the EU and National Control Programme for Salmonella regulations.
